Who Is The Holy Spirit

One of the most profound and distinctive revelations of the whole Bible is that of the person and work of the HOLY SPIRIT. That the Holy Spirit is a person, separate and distinct from both the Father and the Son.

The Holy Spirit is not wind, fire, goose bumps or a white dove.

Jesus knew this and taught us : "and I will pray the father and He shall give you another comforter, that HE....John14:16.

The Holy Spirit is not an it, He is HIM.

We need to understand that when we are dealing with the Holy Spirit, we are dealing with a person. The Bible uses metaphors to describe the Holy Spirit to help us understand his activities but that doesn't make him a substance. For us to know who the Holy Spirit is, we need to understand who he is not and what he is:

1. He is not an attitude, atmosphere or environment.

2. He is not the anointing oil.

3. He is not a mantle, but can come over you as a mantle.

4. He is not fire but he purifies like fire.

5. He is not a white bird. He is as gentle as a dove but he is not a dove.

6. He is not a wind, but can move quickly in any direction like wind.

Remember, the HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON.

Before Pentecost

The Holy Spirit didn't visit the earth during Pentecost, he was here from the beginning of the beginning. He existed before creation and even before there was a beginning.

Proverbs 8:22-31

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.  I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was, I brought forth. While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

Again after creation, we see his activities in the Old Testament in his work with Moses, Joshua, Samson, David, Saul and countless others who were mightily used by him.

The bible is littered with His footprints and one cannot read the bible from the beginning to the end without encountering this mysterious, unseen but real member of the God head:

i) He is the life giving force to God's creation:

Genesis 1:1-2

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Revelation 22:17

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

ii) The Holy Spirit was instrumental in endowing Joshua with wisdom:

Deuteronomy 34:9

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.

iii) He guided the Israelites through their wilderness journeys:

Nehemiah 9:20

20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

iv) He changed ordinary men like David and Saul to become kings:

1 Samuel 10:6

And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

1 Samuel 10:10

And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

1 Samuel 16:13

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren:and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

v) He was instrumental in the ministry of the prophets:

Ezekiel 2:2

And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.

vi) He endowed Daniel with skill, wisdom and supreme intellect:

Daniel 5:11

11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;

vii) He anointed men with architectural skills to build the tabernacle:

Exodus 31:2-3

See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

viii) He came over Gideon to deliver Israel from captivity:

Judges 6:34

But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.
