What Is The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit
The baptism of the Holy Ghost is an experience the believer receives after being born again. It is a promise from God to all those who believe in Jesus Christ.
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them:only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles 'hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
John the Baptist gave witness of Christ before His baptism that: ' I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I , whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire" (Matthew 3:11)
Steps To Receiving The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit
1. See That God Gave the Gift of The Holy Spirit on the Day Of Pentecost
This gift has been available ever since. Help the individual know it is up to him or her to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. He is not to beg God to fill him with the Holy Spirit. Unbelief begs. Faith shouts the victory.”
2. See That Anyone Who Is Saved Is Ready To Receive The Holy Spirit
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”
3. Expect To Receive the Holy Spirit When Hands Are Laid on Him
Some are given the gift of laying on of hands for people to receive the Holy Spirit and healing. This gift is given by God, as we see from Acts 8:18-20.
Even if a Spirit-filled believer does not have this ministry of laying on of hands, it is all right for him to pray with the candidate, because it releases the candidate’s faith. When the believer lays hands on the candidate, he cannot give the candidate the Holy Spirit. His prayers can bring God’s power on people, but they must receive on their own.”
4. Expect to Speak :
Tell the candidate he is to speak! The Holy Spirit will act on his vocal cords, lips, and tongue, and will put supernatural words on his lips, but the candidate must put the sound into action and speak out.
The Holy Spirit gives the utterance, but man does the speaking.
And THEY were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and BEGAN TO SPEAK with other tongues, AS THE SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE.”
Open your mouth (this can be an act of faith), breathe in, and then tell God, “I am receiving the Holy Spirit right now by faith.”
When Jesus said, “Come and drink,” He was speaking of the infilling of the Holy Spirit. When a person takes a drink of water, he opens his mouth and takes a breath. You can’t take a drink of water with your mouth closed, and you can’t receive the Holy Spirit with your mouth closed.
Open your mouth and then fearlessly, boldly, lift your voice and make those supernatural sounds that want to come, working his tongue and lips as he would if he were speaking his native language.
Speaking in tongues is actually cooperation with the Holy Spirit.
Ten Reasons Why Every Believer Must Develop Himself By Speaking In Tongues
1. Speaking in tongues is a promise to every believer.
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned". And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” (Mark 16:16,17)
2. Speaking in tongues helps you to pray according to the will of God.
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning’s which cannot be uttered”(Romans 8:26,27).
3. Speaking in tongues builds you up to become a strong and powerful Christian.
“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” (Jude 1:20).
4. Speaking in tongues is talking to God directly in a language only He understands
“For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries” (1 Corinthians 14:2).
5. Speaking in tongues gives your spirit the opportunity to pray.
“For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14).
6. Speaking in tongues makes your spirit pray best about things concerning you.
Your spirit knows deeper things about yourself than any other part of you. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:11). Sometimes you may not understand what you are going through in order to pray meaningfully in your normal language. However, you can still pray very effectively in tongues because your spirit knows many things that your mind hasn’t yet grasped. Therefore allow your spirit to pray!
7. Speaking in tongues makes you pray for a long time.
You are not limited by language, vocabulary and how to express yourself and so you can pray for a long time. “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14)
8. Speaking in tongues is a better way to express thanks and appreciation to God.
“Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? For thou verily givest thanks well” (1 Corinthians 14:16,17).”
9. Speaking in tongues makes you more aware of the power of Christ.
You will become bold as you become more and more aware of the power that is at work in the believer. You can stand boldly as a true witness for Jesus. You are fearless in the face of demonic activity and your faith to deal with them is firm. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
10. Speaking in tongues makes you become more conscious of the presence of the Holy Spirit in you as you continue to communicate with God in tongues.
The Holy Spirit is in us to help us. Being more aware of His presence helps you to develop a personal relationship with Him and engage His participation, contribution and influence in our lives. “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16-17).”
