The Anointing

When we speak of the anointing, we are speaking of a special grace, endowment, gift, power, ability, access God grants a person to accomplish a specific task.

The Anointing in all believers:

1 John 2:27

27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you:but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The version of the anointing  used here is chrisma; an unguent or smearing, i. e. (figuratively) the special endowment (“chrism”) of the Holy Spirit:— anointing, unction. This verse tells us all believers have been smeared or sealed with the Holy Spirit. Every Christian has the only spirit in the, and his presence is the seal of authenticity of our faith.

Ephesians 4:30- And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption..

 The Anointing to Minister:

The Anointing is for every member of the House of God to fulfill a Divine appointment in the work to which God calls them while they are here on the earth. When God anoints (consecrates, sets aside, apart) someone for a task, God equips them with special power, or grace or ability to carry out that task. In the case of Bezaleel, who was anointed to build the tabernacle, he was endowed with the ability to build with heavens blueprint for the tabernacle. The anointing to an office may not always be visibly supernatural but every ability God grants is inherently supernatural.

Our standards of who is anointed and who is not,  normally revolves around who can preach with signs and wonders following. Signs and wonders is just one components of the anointing to minister. The Holy Spirit works equally supernaturally in his servants in areas of wisdom, counsel, might, knowledge.

Isaiah 11:1-2

 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

As we realize from the verse above, the Holy Spirit manifests himself in so many ways besides "falling under the power", working of miracles, and working of signs and wonders. If God consecrates a person into the office of an evangelist, that person may be given the ability to work miracles, signs and wonders. On the other hand, a person with the ability to teach may not operate in the ability to work miracles but will have deeper, supernatural insight into the word of God.

1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

The traditional ministerial gifts have specific gifts that are given for their effective functions.  God grants specific anointing to go with each ministerial office. for instance a prophet will be anointed with the gifts of revelation, whiles an evangelist will be anointed with the gift of working of signs, wonders and supernatural ability to preach.

On the other hand, God anoints people to do non traditional ministerial works. For instance David was anointed to function as a king. So was Solomon and other kings of Israel. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is not restricted to the pulpit only, but it extends to any divinely granted assignment.

Special Anointing for Special purpose:

God anoints, empowers people with special abilities to perform unique tasks. As we see in this scripture, bezaleel was given a special gift of wisdom to build.

Exodus 36:1

1 Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the Lord put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the Lord had commanded.

Equally, God anointed David with the gift of wisdom to enable him lead Israel.

1 Kings 10:23-24

So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom. And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart
